Lithuanian influencer and public figure Gerda Žemaitė has spoken publicly about the conclusion of a harrowing case involving sustained online harassment, expressing relief and a desire to set a precedent for accountability in the digital sphere. Žemaitė, known for her outspoken views and active social media presence, endured a period of intense online terror, culminating in legal proceedings.
Relief After a Prolonged Legal Battle
Žemaitė recently shared her feelings following the judgment in the case, describing a sense of “excitement and joy” at the prospect of finally being free from the torment. “Really excitement, it feels a lot, but it is also a joy, because the realization is that this is the end – no longer will have to attend the meetings, you will not have to see that person’s face. Really unpleasant judicial proceedings,” she stated. she characterized the experience as a challenging and draining process, but ultimately expressed optimism about moving forward. “As and which day I said - a gorgeous and luminous stage comes to me in life.”
Žemaitė emphasized that her decision to speak openly about the ordeal wasn’t driven by personal need, but by a commitment to transparency and public awareness. “Maybe I wouldn’t share or talk if it wasn’t a public interest in knowing it, so I’m sharing. I really don’t think I can’t do it,” she explained. She believes that bringing these types of cases into the light is crucial for fostering a safer online environment and empowering others who might potentially be experiencing similar abuse.
A Measured Victory: 17-Month Sentence and Hope for Restrictions
While Žemaitė expressed satisfaction with the outcome, she admitted to initially hoping for a more severe penalty. The perpetrator received a 17-month prison sentence, a result Žemaitė considered a step in the right direction, despite not being the full extent of her expectations.
“The point is that I was thinking that justice was done correctly. Of course, it was naive to expect a real prison sentence – it did not happen, but after summing up all the offenses, I received 17 months’ imprisonment,” she said.
More importantly, Žemaitė hopes the sentence will serve as a deterrent to others engaging in online harassment. She anticipates that the restrictions imposed as part of the sentence will be notable, including specialist care and limitations on the perpetrator’s freedom. “The essential thing is that it will certainly be a big lesson for others, as that restriction of freedom will be strict, with specialist care and certainly not being able to do what they wont. There will be some obligations not to do, and I very much hope that one of the points will be restricted and verification of social networks,” she stated.
A Precedent for Responsible online Discourse
Žemaitė’s ultimate goal is to establish a precedent that discourages irresponsible and harmful behavior online. She hopes this case will send a clear message to individuals who misuse their platforms to spread slander and abuse. “I am glad because it will be a good lesson not only for her own but also for other knights of the show, which often confuse their opinion with slander,” she concluded. Žemaitė’s courage in speaking out and pursuing legal action is likely to inspire others to challenge online harassment and demand accountability for those who perpetrate it.
