A viral TikTok trend known as the Door Kick Challenge, or Door Knock Challenge, is prompting widespread warnings from law enforcement agencies across the United States and the United Kingdom. The trend involves participants, typically teenagers, aggressively banging on or kicking random residential doors, often during the night, before fleeing the scene.

While the behavior resembles traditional pranks like ding-dong ditch, authorities report that this iteration has escalated into significant property damage and serious safety risks. The trend has seen a major resurgence in 2025, spreading rapidly through TikTok and other social platforms.

Origins and Evolution of the Trend

The challenge may have originated in 2021 as a more lighthearted activity involving college students. Early versions of the trend featured participants playing the opening riff of the song Die Young by Ke$ha from a portable speaker, timing a kick to the beat of the song’s drum before running away.

At that time, the pranks were typically directed at friends in school or college dorm rooms. However, the trend has since evolved into a more malicious activity targeting strangers’ homes, with some participants banging on doors until they nearly come off their hinges.

Legal Consequences and Property Damage

The real-world impact of the challenge has led to felony charges and substantial financial losses for homeowners. Law enforcement agencies have classified the behavior as criminal trespassing or attempted burglary.

Documented incidents of damage and legal action include:

• In Las Vegas, Nevada, a resident reported $5,000 in damages after participants repeatedly kicked their door.
• In Van Buren Township, Michigan, juveniles faced felony property destruction charges after causing more than $1,000 in damage.
• In DeBary, Florida, two teenagers were charged with felony burglary for damaging a front door.
• In Elk Grove, California, police reported eight incidents within 30 days, where teens used e-bikes to reach homes, kick doors, and flee. One homeowner in this area suffered nearly $900 in damage.

Safety Risks and Law Enforcement Warnings

Police departments are concerned that the aggressive nature of the challenge can be mistaken for a home invasion or an attempted burglary. This perception creates a high risk of violent confrontations between participants, and homeowners.

Russell Klumpp of the Topeka Police Department in Kansas stated that residents inside a home can easily mistake the conduct for someone trying to break in to cause harm. This can lead to homeowners responding to the perceived threat in various ways, including the use of firearms.

Similar warnings have been issued in other regions. In Waukesha County, Wisconsin, one homeowner grabbed a firearm after hearing a loud bang on their door at night. Local police in Louisville, Kentucky, warned that homeowners could legally use deadly force if they believed an intruder was attempting to break in.

Not only is this illegal and classified as criminal trespassing or attempted burglary, but it also puts everyone involved at serious risk.
