Oracle to Secure US TikTok Operations Under New agreement
Tech giant Oracle has been designated as the security provider for a United States-based version of TikTok’s algorithm, according to a White House proclamation made on September 22, 2024. This development stems from a deal designed to facilitate the sale of TikTok’s American operations, addressing ongoing national security concerns.
Restructuring TikTok’s US Presence
The agreement establishes a new joint venture company based within the United States to manage TikTok’s US operations. A senior White House official confirmed that this entity will be governed by a “majority-American board of directors,” signaling a shift in control away from its chinese parent company, ByteDance.
Algorithm Oversight and Data Security
A core component of the agreement involves transferring a copy of TikTok’s proprietary content advice algorithm to this US-based joint venture. This algorithm will undergo thorough inspection and retraining utilizing US user data, overseen by Oracle as the security provider. The goal is to ensure the algorithm operates independently and securely within the United States.
Long-Standing National Security concerns
The US government has consistently expressed concerns regarding the potential for China to access user data or influence content displayed on TikTok.These concerns initially gained prominence during the administration of President Donald trump and have continued under President Joe Biden. In fact, Congress passed legislation compelling ByteDance to divest its US assets or face a complete ban of the platform.
Policymakers have warned that TikTok could be exploited to gather facts on American citizens or manipulate the information they consume on social media. The new agreement with Oracle represents a notable step towards mitigating these risks and safeguarding US national security interests.
