TikTok User Gains Views with Yu Gwan-sun Memorial Videos

February 25, 2026 Lisa Park - Tech Editor Tech

South Korea is leveraging artificial intelligence (AI) to preserve and present the stories of its independence movement heroes, with a particular focus on figures like Yu Gwan-sun and An Jung-geun. The initiative, spearheaded by SK Telecom in partnership with the Independence Hall of Korea, aims to create immersive and interactive experiences for visitors, blending historical remembrance with cutting-edge technology.

The project, unveiled Friday at the Independence Hall of Korea in Cheonan, builds upon a collaboration that began in March 2020. It features several key components, including an augmented reality (AR) exhibition, a conversational AI robot, and AI-restored photos and videos of historical figures. Visitors can scan QR codes to access additional stories related to the independence movement, with new content planned for release in November.

Yu Gwan-sun, born on December 16, 1902, is a central figure in this effort. She played a crucial role in the March First Movement of 1919, also known as the Sam-il Independence Movement, becoming an activist and leader at just 16 years old. The AI-powered recreations aim to bring her story – and those of others – to life for a new generation.

The AI technology employed includes SK Telecom’s Supernova AI image restoration technology, used to enhance and revitalize historical photographs and videos. This allows for a clearer and more engaging visual representation of these figures and events. A talking AI robot, powered by ChatGPT, will engage visitors in real-time conversations about the independence movement, providing commentary and answering questions.

An Jung-geun, born on September 2, 1879, is another key figure being highlighted. He is remembered for assassinating Itō Hirobumi, the first prime minister of Japan, who was instrumental in Japan’s expansionist policies in Korea. An’s actions were motivated by a belief that Itō’s continued existence would destabilize East Asia and harm relations between Japan and Korea. He was executed in Lushun, China, on March 26, 1910, after enduring torture in prison.

The use of AI in this context extends beyond simple restoration and conversation. The AR component allows visitors to overlay digital information onto the physical environment, creating an immersive experience that contextualizes historical events. This approach aims to make history more accessible and engaging, particularly for younger audiences accustomed to interactive digital content.

The project reflects a broader trend of utilizing AI to preserve and promote cultural heritage. While AI-driven image and video restoration is becoming increasingly common in museums and archives globally, the integration of a conversational AI robot represents a more novel application. The ChatGPT-powered robot allows for a dynamic and personalized learning experience, adapting to individual visitor interests and questions.

The initiative also highlights the growing interest in commemorating Yu Gwan-sun specifically. Recent online activity, including a series of TikTok videos posted starting February 22nd, have garnered over 200,000 views, demonstrating a renewed focus on her legacy. TikTok content creators are sharing information about her life and contributions to the Korean independence movement, reaching a wider audience through short-form video.

A memorial service was also held in Itaewon on September 26, 2025, to mark the 105th anniversary of Yu Gwan-sun’s death, further illustrating the ongoing remembrance of her sacrifice. This event, and the broader AI-driven initiative, underscore the importance of preserving the memory of those who fought for Korean independence.

The SK Telecom project isn’t simply about showcasing technology; it’s about using technology to foster a deeper understanding of a pivotal period in Korean history. By combining AI-powered restoration, interactive AR experiences, and conversational AI, the Independence Hall of Korea is attempting to create a more compelling and accessible narrative for visitors, ensuring that the stories of Yu Gwan-sun, An Jung-geun, and others are not forgotten.
