The upcoming Syrian drama series “Al-Maulana” is generating significant buzz ahead of its premiere during the 2026 Ramadan season. Streaming platform Shahid released the first teaser trailer, showcasing star Taim Hassan in a role poised to be a dramatic departure for the acclaimed actor. The series unfolds against the backdrop of a forgotten village, hinting at a narrative steeped in human struggles and a search for hope.
Hassan portrays “Jaber,” a character defined by a life lived in the shadow of death, constantly fleeing from existence itself. The core of “Al-Maulana” revolves around Jaber’s audacious scheme: assuming the identity of a “Maulana” – a respected religious figure – and hiding behind a sacred lineage. This transformation allows him to evolve from a fugitive haunted by his past into a perceived savior for a community that has long awaited its spiritual leader, reigniting their determination to persevere.
The teaser also features veteran actress Mona Wasef, who poses a central question that amplifies the series’ suspense: “Do you think this lie will succeed, or will it be exposed?” Nour Ali, another key cast member, hints at the complexities of her character, “Shahla,” who harbors a secret she strives to protect from the outset, suggesting a web of interconnected narratives and a shared mystery surrounding Jaber’s assumed identity.
“Al-Maulana” boasts an ensemble cast including Fares Al-Helou, Nancy Khoury, Georges Jabara, and Jamal Ali. The series is directed by Samer Barqawi, a frequent collaborator with Hassan, marking another anticipated pairing for the duo. The script is a collaborative effort from Kefah Zeini, Basel Al-Fa’our, and Youssef Sharqawi, based on a story by Banna Haddad.
Shahid has confirmed that “Al-Maulana” will be exclusively available on its platform throughout Ramadan. The streaming service describes the series as “a story born from a borrowed identity,” aiming to rekindle hope and position it as a frontrunner in the Ramadan viewing trends this year.
The origins of the Madrasah Ibtidaiyah (MI) Al-Maulana Sepanjang, located in Dusun Sepanjang Kulon, Desa Sepanjang, Kecamatan Glenmore, Kabupaten Banyuwangi, are rooted in the founder of the KFK AL – Maulana Foundation’s desire to establish basic education institutions in their hometown. According to information from the foundation, the area previously lacked such facilities, prompting the initiative to provide educational access to local children. The establishment of the school was also motivated by overcrowding in nearby educational institutions and the founder’s background in primary school education.
MI Al-Maulana, legally established on May 6, 2020, with permission number 339/2020 and operational permit number MIS/10/0246/2020, initially faced challenges in attracting students. The first two years after receiving its permits were marked by zero enrollment, largely attributed to the COVID-19 pandemic disrupting the planned student recruitment process and a lack of adequate classroom facilities. The school’s name, “Al-Maulana,” is derived from the foundation’s name, signifying “the Maulana family.” The school is described as a Quranic Tahfidz-based Madrasah Ibtidaiyah, emphasizing memorization of the Quran.
Interestingly, the name Al-Maulana also appears in connection with the Royal Sultanate of Sulu and North Borneo. His Royal Majesty Paduka Mahasari Al-Maulana Ampun Sultan Hadji Muedzul-Lail Tan Kiram ibni Almarhum Sultan Mohammad Mahakuttah Abdulla Kiram is the 35th Sultan of Sulu and North Borneo. The Royal and Hashemite Order of the Pearl, established in June 2011, is dedicated to him, uniting the royal and chivalrous traditions of the Sultanate. Pearls hold significant cultural and economic importance to the region, historically reserved for the Sultan and considered among the most valuable in the world.
