Timothée Chalamet is calling the third installment of Denis Villeneuve’s Dune saga “the eeriest one” yet, reflecting on a heightened intensity during filming as he prepares to conclude his portrayal of Paul Atreides. The actor shared these insights during a recent conversation with Matthew McConaughey at a town hall event hosted by Variety and CNN at the University of Texas at Austin.

The reunion was particularly poignant given the actors’ shared history. Over a decade ago, a then 19-year-old Chalamet had a small role in Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar, alongside McConaughey. Now, Chalamet has ascended to become one of the most sought-after actors in Hollywood, with a string of critical and commercial successes including Dune, Wonka, and Marty Supreme to his name.

Speaking with McConaughey, Chalamet described a sense of creative freedom that allowed for unexpected turns in the final Dune film. “Especially on this third one, all the great s— you see on screen is from freedom of movement and freedom of choice,” he said. “And with Denis, we really had a good rhythm. It’s the eeriest one. It’s a big swing.” This suggests a willingness to deviate from established narrative paths, potentially offering a darker or more ambiguous conclusion to the epic story.

Chalamet also revealed a renewed commitment to the physicality of his role, specifically referencing the iconic ornithopter sequences. “He also confirmed the new film will feature an ornithopter sequence like the first film, but ‘this time I was way more geared up’,” he explained. Knowing this would be his last time embodying Paul Atreides, Chalamet approached the filming with a sense of urgency and reverence. “I didn’t want to be complacent about a single moment. Everything was sacred, and it was my last time doing a ‘Dune’ film, so I really wanted to treat it as sacred. Because people can get complacent, but I was more intense on the third one. It felt like that was the natural momentum, so I wanted to push against that as hard as I could.”

The conversation extended beyond Dune, touching on the rapidly evolving landscape of the film industry, particularly the rise of artificial intelligence. McConaughey, who has recently taken legal steps to protect his voice and likeness, voiced concerns about the potential impact of AI on the acting profession. He posited that within five years, awards shows might even introduce categories recognizing achievements in AI-generated performances, a prediction reported by Variety.

Dune: Part Three, which wrapped principal photography in November 2025, is slated for release in theaters on December 18, 2026. The film will see the return of core cast members including Zendaya, Rebecca Ferguson, and Jason Momoa, alongside newcomer Robert Pattinson. Villeneuve’s conclusion to the trilogy promises to be a significant cinematic event, and Chalamet’s comments suggest a willingness to embrace risk and deliver a finale that is both faithful to the source material and boldly original.

The interview, which aired on CNN, offers a rare glimpse into the creative process behind one of the most ambitious science fiction franchises in recent memory. Chalamet’s reflections on his journey with the character of Paul Atreides, and his commitment to delivering a powerful and resonant conclusion, underscore the dedication and artistry that have defined the Dune project from its inception.
