U.S. Sen.Tina Smith, D-Minn., voiced concerns about rising political violence and her own security following the assassination of Minnesota State Representative Melissa Hortman. Smith said her name appeared on a list of potential targets discovered in the suspect’s vehicle.
Smith emphasized the need to de-escalate political tension in the country, calling the current climate a “tipping point.” She stressed that political differences should not lead to violence, which threatens both personal safety and the democratic process.
“it is a tragedy for our state, and it is a personal loss for me,” Smith said, referring to Hortman’s death. Smith had seen Hortman and State Senator John Hoffman hours before the shooting at the Humphrey-Mondale Dinner.
Smith acknowledged the support she is receiving from local law enforcement and Capitol Police, adding that the suspect’s alleged impersonation of a police officer complicates the security situation.
“It is a terrible thing to think that public servants have to worry about their personal safety in such a tangible and scary way,” Smith said.
