Former rugby player Mike Tindall is a key figure behind R360,a new rugby league competition seeking to reshape the sport.The league aims to bring generational change to rugby.
R360’s architects include Tindall, Stuart Hooper, formerly Bath’s director of rugby, and John loffhagen, a lawyer involved in creating the Indian Premier League and LIV Golf. Mark Spoors, a former rugby agent, is also a co-founder.
the R360 competition proposes a “grand prix” format with 12 franchises—eight for men and four for women. These teams would compete in 16 venues worldwide, including Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, Nou Camp, and sao Paulo.
Planned for April-June and August-September, the league intends to make players available for international matches, positioning rugby as a summer sport. R360 aims to recruit 300 top male and female players and claims many have already signed agreements contingent on securing sufficient funding by September of next year. The new rugby breakaway league also reports attracting franchise bids from team owners in the NFL, Formula One, and other individuals across four continents. the project has garnered financial backing from U.S. and U.K. investors.

“Rugby is feeling the fallout of the last few years with financial mismanagement, declining investment in the club game and a product that is struggling to evolve,” said Mike Tindall, co-founder and sporting director, R360. “Rugby’s lack of innovation and ability to change risks losing its appeal to new audiences and its younger market.”
