Tiny Home Village Expands to Salt Lake City & More States

Salt Lake City Tiny Home Village Plans Ambitious Expansion

Salt Lake City’s Other Side Village, a community providing housing for individuals experiencing chronic homelessness, is poised for a significant expansion, potentially adding nearly 400 new units. The project hinges on securing the remaining funds needed to complete the second phase of construction, according to village officials.

The expansion plans were unveiled Tuesday, September 23, 2025, with organizers announcing that $30 million in donations had already been committed to the project. Key contributors include The Miller and Boyer families, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and the state of Utah, which have pledged $5 million and $3 million respectively.

“Now is the time for all of us — individuals, businesses and community organizations — to come together to help this effort grow,” said Gail Miller, chair of the Larry H. & Gail Miller Family Foundation. “We believe in what’s possible here. We see it. We don’t have to just believe. It’s real. It’s here. It’s happening.”

The Other Side Village currently offers housing and support services to individuals overcoming challenges such as mental health issues and substance use disorders. The village’s approach focuses on providing a stable living environment and resources to help residents regain independence.

Melissa Hepworth, a resident of the village, shared her experience, stating she felt “an immense amount of peace” upon arriving at the community. She described it as the first time in roughly two decades she felt she had a home, after facing years of hardship including psychotic episodes, incarceration, and periods of homelessness.

Village co-founder Ted Broman indicated that an additional $24 million is needed to build the 396 new units planned for city land surrounding the current neighborhood near Indiana Avenue and Redwood Road. The organization is currently working to finalize the lease for the property and obtain the necessary city permits before construction can begin.

Tim Stay, CEO of The Other Side Foundation, stated the organization aims to complete the second phase of construction by the end of 2028. The first 32 homes of the village opened at the end of 2024, marking the initial step in providing a second chance for individuals experiencing homelessness.

The project’s success is seen as a collaborative effort, with Broman emphasizing, “It takes a village to build a village.” The expansion represents a significant investment in addressing chronic homelessness in Salt Lake City and providing a pathway to stability for vulnerable individuals. A new tiny home was installed at the village on Friday, February 13, 2026, signaling continued progress toward easing homelessness.
