Netflix’s new documentary, Titan: The OceanGate Disaster, examines the tragic implosion of the Titan submersible and the events leading up to the disaster. The documentary highlights the repeated ignoring of warning signs, including the sounds of the hull disintegrating under immense pressure, before the vessel imploded on June 18, 2023, killing all five aboard.
The story of the missing Titan, which was on a tourist expedition to view the wreck of the Titanic, quickly became a global media spectacle. Mark monroe, the documentary filmmaker, expressed unease with the viral coverage, feeling it overshadowed the human cost of the tragedy.
Monroe said that David Lochridge, OceanGate’s former chief pilot, was a key reason he joined the project. Lochridge,a former Royal Navy diver, was fired in 2018 after raising safety concerns.
Lochridge portrays OceanGate CEO Stockton Rush as driven by ego and a desire for fame. He recounts a near-disaster during a dive to the Andrea Doria shipwreck, where Rush’s piloting led to a perilous situation.Lochridge said that his relationship with Rush deteriorated after he raised safety concerns about the Titan.
“He wanted fame, first and foremost,to fuel his ego,” Lochridge said in the film.
Monroe described Rush as a privileged individual driven to make a significant impact. The documentary highlights Rush’s decision to use carbon fiber for the Titan, a material cheaper and lighter than traditional steel. Rush aimed to create a fleet of submersibles for high-net-worth tourists, charging $250,000 per trip. Though, he repeatedly disregarded regulations and chose not to have the Titan certified by an independent body.
During the Titan’s first deep ocean test, Rush dismissed intensifying popping sounds as he approached the Titanic‘s depth, declaring the mission a success despite not reaching the intended depth. Monroe emphasized that these decisions, made over a decade, contributed to the disaster.
Tony Nissen, OceanGate’s former director of engineering, revealed that he warned Rush against storing the submersible in sub-zero temperatures after a loud bang was heard on
