Apple is preparing a major overhaul of its high-end MacBook Pro lineup, with the introduction of OLED display technology and a potential rebranding as MacBook Ultra, according to multiple reports from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman and other industry sources. The changes, expected to debut in early 2027, would mark the first significant redesign of the MacBook Pro since 2021 and represent Apple’s first use of OLED screens in any Mac computer.

The shift from mini-LED to OLED displays would bring improved image quality to the MacBook Pro, including richer colors, higher contrast ratios, and true blacks, as each pixel in an OLED panel can turn completely off without relying on a backlight. This technology has already been used in Apple’s iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch devices but has not previously appeared in its Mac lineup.

Touchscreen and Dynamic Island Features

In addition to the display upgrade, the refreshed MacBook Pro is expected to include touchscreen functionality for the first time, with Apple reportedly optimizing macOS to support touch navigation. This would enable features such as dynamic control enlargement when interacting with the menu bar, pinch-to-zoom gestures, and faster scrolling, marking a fundamental rethink of how users interact with the operating system on Mac hardware.

Apple is also planning to bring the Dynamic Island interface to the Mac for the first time, replacing the current notch that houses the FaceTime camera with a hole-punch cutout. The Dynamic Island, first introduced on the iPhone 14 Pro, adapts its shape and size to display alerts, notifications, and ongoing activities in a more interactive way.

Performance and Design Updates

The updated models are expected to feature M6 Pro and M6 Max chips manufactured using TSMC’s advanced 2nm process, offering improved performance and efficiency over the current M5 series. Additional rumored changes include a thinner overall design and the potential addition of built-in cellular connectivity, which would allow the MacBook Pro to connect to wireless networks without relying on Wi-Fi or external hotspots.

Branding and Launch Timing

While the 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro were recently updated with M5 Pro and M5 Max chips, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman has indicated that the higher-end models will receive a major redesign by early 2027. Apple may use the “MacBook Ultra” branding for these models, positioning them above the standard MacBook Pro lineup as a higher-priced, premium option. However, the exact naming convention remains uncertain.

The launch timeline has been adjusted due to global memory chip shortages, with Gurman noting that early 2027 is now more likely than a late 2026 release. Apple’s constrained supply of RAM is cited as a factor that could delay the rollout. The entry-level 14-inch MacBook Pro with the M6 chip is not expected to include many of the changes planned for the higher-end models.

Apple last redesigned the MacBook Pro in 2021 with the launch of the M1 Pro and M1 Max models. The upcoming overhaul would represent the first major redesign in at least five years and is anticipated by customers who have been waiting for significant updates to the professional laptop line.
