Coach Jermaine Woods’ Tenure

Jermaine Woods was named the seventh head coach of the Norfolk State women’s basketball program on April 7, 2025. He assumed leadership of the program following a national coaching search and took over a team that had recorded 30 wins during the 2023-24 campaign.

Before his appointment at Norfolk State, Woods spent three seasons as the head coach at Coppin State. During his final season with the Eagles, he guided the team to a 19-15 record and a second-round appearance in the WNIT.

While at Coppin State, Woods led his teams to several notable non-conference victories, including wins over Arizona State, FIU, and Pittsburgh. The victory against Pittsburgh was recorded as the first-ever win for Coppin State against a Power Conference program.

In his first two seasons at Coppin State, Woods posted a combined record of 30-40. His first season included non-conference wins against Saint Peter’s, Winthrop, and St. Francis (Pa.), while his second season saw the team advance to the MEAC Semifinals for the first time since 2016.

Professional Background and Playing Career

Woods brings experience from several Power Four institutions to the Norfolk State program. His coaching career began at Virginia Tech, and he later held positions at Wake Forest and Old Dominion.

Prior to his coaching career, Woods played collegiate basketball at Belmont-Abbey before transferring to Christopher Newport University. During his time at Christopher Newport, he was recognized as a D3 All-American.
