Chelsea have suffered their fifth consecutive Premier League defeat without scoring a goal for the first time since the 1911-12 season, prompting a scathing rebuke from head coach Liam Rosenior following their 3-0 loss to Brighton and Hove Albion on Tuesday.

The result leaves Chelsea seventh in the Premier League table, seven points adrift of fifth-place Liverpool with just four matches remaining in the season. The top five positions qualify for next season’s UEFA Champions League, but Chelsea’s recent form has put their European hopes in serious jeopardy.

By far. It was unacceptable in every aspect of the game, unacceptable in our attitude.

Liam Rosenior, Chelsea head coach

Rosenior questioned his team’s desire and professionalism after the defeat at the AMEX Stadium, stating that he could no longer defend the players’ performance. He described the display as “indefensible” and said it was the worst of his tenure, citing a lack of intensity, duels lost, and no attempts on target.

The Brighton goals came from Ferdi Kadioglu, Jack Hinshelwood, and Danny Welbeck. Rosenior noted that while the scoreline did not fully reflect Brighton’s dominance, his team failed to register a single shot on target throughout the match.

I keep coming out and defending the players. That’s indefensible, that performance tonight.

Liam Rosenior

Rosenior admitted that both he and the players needed to look in the mirror, acknowledging that the general attitude and spirit were lacking. He said he had felt the team had turned a corner after previous results but that the performance against Brighton showed otherwise.

Determination, maybe three or four out of the 11. That’s nowhere near enough for this club. Nowhere near enough.

Liam Rosenior

The defeat marked Chelsea’s fifth straight league game without a goal, a sequence last seen during the 1911-12 campaign when the club also failed to score in five consecutive matches. Rosenior referenced the historical context, noting that 1912 was the same year the Titanic sank.

The most difficult night, not even just here so far at this magnificent football club, but in my career.

Liam Rosenior

Chelsea now face an FA Cup semi-final on Sunday, which Rosenior said must be the starting point for change. He expressed that the performance against Brighton did not represent him or the football club and that such displays must not be repeated.

I never want to see it again. Some of the things I was witnessing today, I never, ever want to see again.

Liam Rosenior

With the Premier League season entering its final stretch, Chelsea’s ability to respond to this criticism will be crucial in determining whether they can salvage a Champions League qualification spot or face another season without European football.
