A Co Down runner sacrificed his personal best to help an exhausted competitor cross the finish line at the 2026 Boston Marathon, an act of sportsmanship that has since gone viral online.
Aaron Beggs, a member of North Down Athletic Club in Northern Ireland, was approaching the finish when he noticed fellow runner Ajay Haridasse collapse shortly after the 26-mile mark. Despite being on track for a strong performance, Beggs stopped immediately to assist Haridasse, who was unable to get back on his feet after falling.
Beggs pulled Haridasse up, but the exhausted runner struggled to remain upright. Seeing the difficulty, another runner, Robson De Oliveira, who was also pursuing his fastest-ever marathon time, paused his race to help. Together, the two men supported Haridasse across the finish line, with their arms around him to keep him moving forward.
What a gentleman! What a phenomenal sportsman. Our Aaron Beggs.
North Down Athletic Club
The club praised Beggs on social media, calling him a “superstar” who “couldn’t pass an athlete in distress.” The post highlighted his selfless decision to prioritize helping a fellow competitor over his own race outcome.
After falling down the fourth time, I was getting ready to crawl.

Spectators captured the incident on video from multiple angles, and the footage quickly spread across social media platforms. One of the posts documenting the event has been viewed more than two million times on X, drawing widespread praise for the runners’ actions.
The moment occurred with the finish line in sight, after both Beggs and De Oliveira had already spent nearly three hours on their feet. Dozens of other competitors passed the struggling Haridasse before the two runners stopped to help.
North Down Athletic Club confirmed Beggs’ affiliation and highlighted the incident as emblematic of the values promoted within the club. No official statements have been issued by the Boston Athletic Association regarding the incident as of the time of reporting.
