President Donald Trump shared surveillance video on social media showing a suspect charging through a security checkpoint at the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner on April 25, 2026, moments before shots were fired outside the event at the Washington Hilton in Washington, D.C.
The video, posted shortly after the FBI announced a suspect was in custody, depicts an individual running at speed past a security checkpoint, with law enforcement officials in pursuit. Trump described the suspect as “armed with multiple weapons” who charged the checkpoint before gunfire erupted.
Secret Service agents swiftly escorted Trump off stage after the shooting began. The president confirmed that he, his Cabinet members, and all attendees were safe following the incident. A U.S. Secret Service agent was shot in their protective gear and hospitalized, according to law enforcement sources cited by CNN.
The suspect, identified as a 31-year-old man from California, was taken into custody and will face charges including using a firearm during a crime of violence and assault on a federal officer with a dangerous weapon, as stated by U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia Jeanine Pirro. Authorities have characterized the suspect as a “lone actor.”
Among those present at the dinner was CNN anchor Wolf Blitzer, who reported seeing the gunman open fire just a few feet away from his position outside the ballroom. Blitzer and dozens of other attendees took cover as law enforcement responded to the scene.
The White House Correspondents’ Association dinner is an annual gathering attended by journalists, political figures, and entertainment industry professionals. The event typically draws celebrities from film, television, and music, making it a notable occasion in the entertainment calendar.
