TKO Group Holdings, also the parent company of UFC and WWE, is venturing into boxing with a new promotion backed by Saudi Arabia. Mark Shapiro, TKO president and chief operating officer, recently outlined the company’s plans for the future of the sport, emphasizing a commitment to high-profile matchups.
The inaugural TKO Boxing event will be headlined by a highly anticipated fight between Saul “Canelo” Alvarez and Terence Crawford on Sept. 12. Turki Alalshikh announced the bout after Alvarez’s recent victory over William Scull, where Alvarez retained his undisputed super middleweight title.
Shapiro said TKO Boxing intends to host approximately 12 events each year for the next five years. The Canelo vs. Crawford fight exemplifies the ”superfight” concept, with Shapiro envisioning one to four such events annually. The Saudi Arabian partners will provide the financial backing for these superfight cards.
“We’re expecting with the boxing organization that we’re putting on an average of call it 12 fights a year, 12 cards a year for each of the next five years,” Shapiro said during a quarterly financial call.
TKO will handle logistics and media rights deals, earning a commission on the superfight cards. These events will be managed separately from the other 12 cards, according to Shapiro.
