Freeport Workers Rescued After Three Days Trapped by Armed Group in Papua
Eighteen workers for PT Freeport Indonesia were rescued on Saturday, January 10, 2026, after being trapped for three days by members of the Free Papua Movement (OPM), an armed separatist group, at Post Tower 270 in the Tembagapura district of Mimika Regency, Central Papua province.
Major General TNI Lucky Avianto, Commander of Operation Habema, confirmed the accomplished rescue. “This rescue operation was carried out in extremely difficult terrain with a high level of threat and limited time as a crucial factor,” Avianto stated in a press release from the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI) on Monday, January 12, 2026.
