Toby Greene Fat-Shaming Controversy: Heeney Clash Under Scrutiny
Greene’s Sledge Sparks Debate as Giants Prepare for Bulldogs Clash
Greater western Sydney’s Toby Greene, a player with a notorious disciplinary record, has once again found himself at the centre of controversy. Greene has been charged a record-equalling 25 times throughout his career, and his latest on-field antics have ignited debate within the AFL community.
high Contact and Sledging: A Tightrope Walk in the AFL
The AFL’s stance on high contact is well-documented, with players facing important repercussions for such incidents. Melbourne defender Steven May recently learned this lesson the hard way, receiving a three-game suspension for a heavy clash with Carlton’s Francis Evans. May is currently appealing the decision, highlighting the league’s strict approach to player safety.
In the midst of this, Greene’s verbal exchange with an unnamed opponent during a recent match has also drawn attention. While Giants coach Adam Kingsley admitted he didn’t witness the first-quarter incident, he and Sydney Swans coach Dean Cox downplayed the severity of Greene’s ”overweight” sledge.
“It’s a really vital game for both clubs,” Kingsley stated. “We certainly know the importance of it, and all the players treat it seriously. So they are trying to put each other off, well within the rules, obviously. But that’s just AFL footy.”
Cox echoed this sentiment, noting the inherent “cheek” that exists between players.”Ther’s always a bit of cheek between some of our players and their players,” cox commented. “Some players push the boundaries a little bit – Toby’s probably one of those.”
Kingsley expressed his disappointment if greene were to face a fine for his comments. “I mean,he didn’t use any language, did he?” he questioned the media post-match,suggesting the sledge was within the bounds of acceptable on-field banter.
Bulldogs Turn Focus to GWS After Essendon Dominance
Simultaneously occurring, the Western Bulldogs are already strategizing for their upcoming clash against Greater Western Sydney, following their commanding 93-point victory over Essendon. Coach Luke Beveridge revealed that planning for the Thursday fixture had commenced immediately after their dominant performance.
“They obviously had a few pretty key inclusions this week, when you think of (Jesse) Hogan and (Sam) Taylor and (Josh) Kelly coming back in this side, so if they keep it together, they’ll be a pretty strong team,” Beveridge remarked, acknowledging the potential strength of the Giants’ lineup.
However, the Bulldogs may receive a boost with the potential return of midfielder Tom Liberatore, who experienced ankle soreness in the essendon game. Conversely, Kelly is likely to miss the Bulldogs match due to a calf issue sustained during Friday night’s game.
Beveridge declined to comment directly on Greene’s “overweight” sledge, maintaining a focus on his team’s preparation.
