TUCSON, Arizona – Savannah Guthrie, the co-host of NBC’s Today program, has publicly appealed for the safe return of her 84-year-old mother, Nancy Guthrie, who has been missing from her home in Catalina Foothills, Arizona, since January 31st. In a video released Saturday, Guthrie and her siblings, Annie and Camron, addressed potential abductors, stating they are willing to pay a ransom for their mother’s release.

“We received your message and we understand,” Guthrie said in the video, which has been widely circulated. “We beg you now to return our mother to us so People can celebrate with her. This represents the only way we will have peace. This is very valuable to us, and we will pay.”

The plea follows the receipt of a ransom note by a Tucson television station, demanding payment in Bitcoin. The FBI and Pima County Sheriff’s Department are investigating the authenticity of the note and the message referenced by Guthrie, but have yet to confirm either. An initial ransom deadline of Thursday at 5 p.m. Passed, followed by a second demand set for Monday, according to authorities.

Authorities believe Nancy Guthrie was abducted from her home, and investigators found evidence of forced entry, including a missing doorbell camera and traces of blood on the porch, later confirmed to be hers. Sheriff Chris Nanos has described Nancy Guthrie as frail and with limited mobility, stating she would have been unable to leave her home without assistance.

The case has prompted a significant law enforcement response, with the FBI leading the investigation alongside the Pima County Sheriff’s Department. A search of the Guthrie property has been conducted, and authorities are appealing to the public for any information that might lead to Nancy Guthrie’s whereabouts.

The family’s willingness to negotiate with potential kidnappers reflects a desperate attempt to secure their mother’s safe return. Retired FBI supervisory agent and hostage negotiator Jason Pack noted the strategic nature of Guthrie’s public message, stating it demonstrated “extraordinary discipline under unimaginable grief and pressure.” Pack observed that the family’s progression from an emotional plea to a proof-of-life demand, and finally a public offer to pay, was designed to maintain communication and lower barriers to Nancy Guthrie’s release. He also highlighted the significance of Guthrie’s use of the word “celebrate,” characterizing it as “the language of resolution, not confrontation.”

The disappearance has unsettled the Catalina Foothills community, with neighbors expressing shock and concern. Some residents have reportedly increased their home security measures and are cooperating with law enforcement by providing surveillance footage.

While the investigation remains ongoing, authorities have not yet identified any suspects. The FBI is offering a reward of $50,000 for information leading to Nancy Guthrie’s recovery or the arrest of those responsible for her disappearance.

The case has drawn national attention, and President Donald Trump indicated on Friday that he expects developments soon. “I think we may have some answers pretty quickly,” he said, without providing further details.

The situation remains fluid, and authorities are urging anyone with information to contact the FBI at 1-800-CALL-FBI. The focus remains on securing the safe return of Nancy Guthrie and bringing those responsible for her disappearance to justice.
