A two-year-old Jack Russell terrier named Elbie has been rescued from a 13th-storey ledge of a high-rise apartment building in Dee Why, a northern beaches suburb of Sydney, after spending two days trapped in the precarious position.
Disappearance and Discovery
Elbie went missing on Saturday, April 25, 2026, after slipping through a gap in the balcony of her owners’ 13th-floor apartment at the Meriton Apartments complex. Despite an exhaustive search of the unit, her owners and a friend, James Tomack, found no trace of the dog. “We start thinking the worst possible thing, maybe she fell off the balcony,” Tomack told Channel 9 News.
The breakthrough came when a neighbour, using a drone, spotted Elbie trapped between the awning and ledge on the opposite side of the building. The discovery prompted an urgent rescue operation involving New South Wales Fire and Rescue.
Daring Rescue Operation
A firefighter spent approximately 20 minutes carefully wrangling Elbie from the narrow ledge, as a crowd of onlookers gathered below. Cheers erupted when the dog was safely freed, marking the end of her harrowing ordeal. Elbie was immediately reunited with her owner, Jake Dobrin, who described his relief at seeing her again. “I didn’t know if I was going to see her again, so very happy,” Dobrin said.
Following the rescue, Elbie was taken to a veterinary clinic for a check-up and spent the night under observation due to the stress of her experience. Her owners confirmed she suffered no serious injuries.
Community Response
The rescue has drawn widespread attention, with many praising the efforts of the firefighters and the neighbour who located Elbie using a drone. The incident has also sparked conversations about pet safety in high-rise buildings, particularly for small breeds prone to slipping through balcony gaps.
Local authorities have not issued any formal statements regarding the incident, but animal welfare groups have used the story to remind pet owners to ensure balconies and outdoor spaces are secure for animals.
