Former Togolese Minister Georges Aïdam Passes Away
Two political groups in Togo, the Action Committee for Renewal (CAR) and the Union of the Republic (UNIR), are mourning the loss of former minister Georges Aïdam, who passed away on September 9, 2024.
The news of his death has been felt more deeply in UNIR than in CAR, as Aïdam was a key figure in the presidential party after leaving CAR, the party he co-founded.
Aïdam’s death occurred following a crisis, according to those close to him. He was elected on April 29 in Ogou and was a former executive of the Action Committee for Renewal (CAR) before joining the presidential party in 2012.
Who was Georges Aïdam?
Georges Aïdam was a former Minister of Education and a prominent figure in Togolese politics. He shared the vice presidency function with Foli-Bazi Katari and was a minister in the Klassou Government responsible for Technical Education and Vocational Training.
Aïdam was born in Anié, in the center of Togo, and was originally from the Ogou Prefecture.
Biography
Georges Aïdam held a Master’s degree in Contemporary History and spent his entire professional career as a History Professor before entering politics in 1991.
Aïdam’s political career began in 1991, and he successively held the following positions:
- Officer Ogou
- Secretary of State responsible for electoral consultations in the transitional national union government (1992)
- Member of the 1st legislature of the 4th Republic (1994-1999)
- Head of Government Staff as a result of the Global Political Agreement of August 20, 2006 (September 2006-December 2007)
After the dissolution of the Togolese People’s Rally (RPT, former ruling party), the Union of the Republic (UNIR) was created in Atakpamé on April 14, 2012. Aïdam, with his extensive experience in politics, inherited the position of First Vice-President of the temporary position of the new presidential party.
