Togo’s Opposition Parties: A Call to Action
«No one, among all those who say they are in the true opposition, who wish and seek at all costs the departure of this anti-Togolese regime of people, should no longer agree to sit at the same table with these men and women of UNITE for any conversations. Not because the opposition would be radical, but agreeing to take such a step towards a power that is so autistic and resistant to any idea of change at the top of the state, would be a waste of time and allow them to gain time.»
This statement highlights the need for Togo’s opposition parties to re-evaluate their approach to negotiations with the current regime. The leaders of the opposition who have understood the unhealthy game are gradually moving away from these initiatives of the RPT-UNIR regime, which aim to maintain the status quo in power.
The Permanent Consultation Framework (CPC): A Tool for the Regime
The CPC, version 2024, has been met with skepticism by many in the opposition. The heavyweights of the opposition parties, such as the ANC, have stayed away from the discussions, citing a lack of sincerity from the regime. Those who have participated in the meetings are not necessarily known to be staunch opponents of Faure Gnassingbé, and their dubious links to power have been confirmed by the statements of the president of the CPC, Maître Traoré Tchassona.
The DMP’s Position: A Cause for Concern
The behavior of the leader of the CDPA and the DMP, Madame Adjamago, has raised eyebrows. Her decision to join the CPC and occupy the position of vice president has been seen as a betrayal by some. The weekly “La Dépêche” has described her actions as “opportunistic” and warned that she will carry the cross before the people.
The Real Problems: Ignored by the CPC
The CPC has avoided addressing the real problems facing Togo, such as the release of political prisoners and the return of refugees. The inflation measures proposed by the regime are not sufficient to ease the heavy burdens weighing on households. The Togolese power, around Faure Gnassingbé, seems more interested in maintaining the status quo than in finding solutions to the country’s problems.
A Call to Action
It is time for Togo’s opposition parties to come together and demand real change. The people of Togo deserve better than a regime that is resistant to any idea of change. The opposition must be careful not to be exploited by the regime and must work towards a truly consensual constitution that represents the aspirations of the Togolese people.
