Tokyo Authorities Investigate Multiple Deaths in Separate Incidents
Tokyo is grappling with a series of unsettling deaths in recent weeks, including a stabbing and a fatal house fire. Investigations are ongoing into both incidents, which have left authorities and residents shaken.
Stabbing in Ota Ward
On , police discovered the body of 44-year-old Akihiro Kawashima, president of an audio equipment-related company, in his apartment in Tokyo’s Ota Ward. Kawashima was found face down in the dining room-kitchen area, suffering from stab wounds to the neck, stomach, thigh and more than ten other parts of his body. Investigators believe he may have died from blood loss.
The discovery was made after two friends contacted police when Kawashima failed to appear for a scheduled meal near Narita Airport in Chiba Prefecture. They arrived at his apartment around 10:40 a.m. On , but received no response. Hearing a phone ringing inside, they requested the apartment manager to call the police. Officers gained entry using a spare key provided by a coworker.
The apartment, located approximately 500 meters southeast of Omori Station, showed no signs of forced entry, as the front door and windows were locked. Investigators found several bloody footprints in the dining room-kitchen area, the hallway, the entrance of the apartment, and a common hallway within the building. Kawashima reportedly had defensive wounds on the fingers of both hands, suggesting a struggle.
Security footage showed Kawashima returning home alone around 6:30 p.m. On , and nothing unusual was observed at that time. Investigators suspect the attack occurred after his return. Kawashima lived alone in a two-bedroom apartment.
