Tokyo Xtreme Racer Returns to PS5 After 22 Years | Release Date & Details

Tokyo Xtreme Racer Returns to PS5 After 22 Years | Release Date & Details

February 26, 2026 Lisa Park - Tech Editor Tech

The high-octane world of Japanese street racing is roaring back to life with the release of Tokyo Xtreme Racer (known as Shutokou Battle in Japan) on PlayStation 5 today, February 26, 2026. Developed by Genki, this marks the series’ first appearance on PlayStation hardware in approximately 22 years, following 2003’s Shutokou Battle 01.

Tokyo Xtreme Racer initially gained a dedicated following with its unique blend of arcade-style racing and a focus on the illegal highway racing scene prevalent in Japan. Unlike many contemporary racing titles that emphasize realistic physics and track-day precision, Tokyo Xtreme Racer prioritizes aggressive head-to-head battles and a compelling narrative centered around defeating a vast roster of rival racers. The game recreates sections of the Tokyo metropolitan expressway system, providing a distinctive urban racing environment.

The release on PS5 follows an Early Access period on PC (Steam) that began on January 23, 2025, with the full PC release arriving on September 25, 2025. The initial announcement came on August 22, 2024, signaling a revival of the franchise after an 18-year hiatus since Import Tuner Challenge and a return to PC gaming after Shutokou Battle Online.

Gameplay and Core Mechanics

The current iteration of Tokyo Xtreme Racer features a single-player “Quest Mode” reminiscent of earlier titles, tasking players with progressing through a story by challenging and defeating named rivals. While a dedicated “Time Attack” mode isn’t currently available, the core gameplay loop incorporates timed driving segments within both cruising and rival battles. A key element distinguishing Tokyo Xtreme Racer is the inclusion of regular traffic – dubbed “The Nameless One” – which players can engage in battle for quick credit gains.

Central to the experience is the “SP Battle” system, a unique mechanic representing the mental fortitude of each racer. Players attempt to deplete their opponent’s SP gauge by overtaking them, with collisions also contributing to gauge reduction. This system encourages a blend of skillful driving and strategic blocking maneuvers.

Vehicle Roster and Customization

The game boasts a substantial vehicle roster of 78 cars from eight domestic Japanese manufacturers. This includes a wide range of vehicles, from popular sports cars to SUVs. Notably, the PS5 release features the debut of Honda vehicles within the series, alongside three models from Lexus.

Customization plays a significant role, with the inclusion of parts from 54 real-world automotive manufacturers. Players can modify their vehicles with a variety of aerodynamic components, wheels, and visual customizations, including vinyls and stickers, allowing for a high degree of personalization.

A Legacy Revived

Tokyo Xtreme Racer’s enduring appeal lies in its distinct identity within the racing genre. It doesn’t attempt to compete with the realism of simulation titles like Forza Motorsport or Assetto Corsa. Instead, it embraces the energy and atmosphere of Japanese street racing culture, offering a fast-paced, arcade-style experience focused on intense one-on-one battles and a compelling storyline. The game’s roots trace back to 1994, drawing inspiration from Japan’s underground racing scene and popular manga.

The development team at Genki has emphasized a commitment to preserving the core elements that made the original games special, avoiding modern racing game tropes and focusing on delivering a faithful recreation of the classic Shutokou Battle experience. The return of the franchise after nearly two decades demonstrates a continued demand for this unique style of racing game.

Tokyo Xtreme Racer is available on PS5 with a digital download price of ¥6,600 (approximately $43 USD as of February 26, 2026) and a physical retail price of ¥7,600 (approximately $50 USD). The game is rated “B” (12+).
