Éric Toledano and Olivier Nakache, the directing duo renowned for the global success of Intouchables, are returning to cinema with their ninth feature film, Just an Illusion (Juste une illusion). The drama-comedy is scheduled for theatrical release on April 15, 2026.
Set in 1985, the film is a coming-of-age story that takes place in the middle-class suburbs of Paris. It focuses on the experiences of Vincent, a nearly 13-year-old boy navigating the transition from childhood to adolescence.
The narrative centers on Vincent’s personal struggles and discoveries during this pivotal life stage. He deals with a strained relationship with a distant older brother and lives within a household where his parents are in constant conflict.
Themes and Creative Direction
Toledano and Nakache have described Just an Illusion as their most personal project to date. The filmmakers intended the story to evoke a sense of nostalgia for a time when young people looked toward the future with a desire to change the world.
The directors chose the mid-1980s as the setting because they view the decade as a creative and bustling period of transition that mirrored the nature of adolescence. The film explores themes of identity, family bonds, faith, friendship, and first love.
It is the result of our profound desire to tell the story of adolescence… It is one of the few moments in life when we live in the present. Just An Illusion is our way of evoking nostalgia for the future, of a time when we looked ahead with a fierce desire to change the world.

The film’s title is a direct reference to the 1982 hit song Just An Illusion
by the British trio Imagination. To complement the period setting, the soundtrack will feature popular tracks from the 1980s.
Cast and Production
The production features a mix of established actors and new talent. The cast includes:

- Louis Garrel
- Camille Cottin
- Pierre Lottin
- Simon Boublil
- Alexis Rosenstiehl
- Jeanne Lamartine
The young protagonist, Vincent, is played by newcomer Simon Torreton. The film was produced by Nicolas Duval Adassovsky through Ten Films and Quad Films, the latter of which also worked with the directors on Intouchables.
Production began around May 7, 2025, with filming taking place in and around Paris. Gaumont handled the sales for the project at Cannes.
Industry Context
This project follows the duo’s recent work on the environmental crisis comedy-drama A Difficult Year, which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2023. With Just an Illusion, Toledano and Nakache return to their interest in social observation and group dynamics, this time viewed through the perspective of a child.
The film is positioned as a blend of family chronicles and social commentary, capturing the specific vulnerabilities and emerging beliefs that develop as a child moves away from the sheltered state of childhood into the unsettling realities of adulthood.
