Tom Cruise F1 Movie: Real Crashes Planned
Brad Pitt Chosen for F1 Movie Over Tom Cruise Due to Safety Concerns
Updated May 30, 2025
The upcoming F1 movie, starring Brad Pitt, almost featured Tom Cruise in the lead role. Director Joseph Kosinski and producer Jerry Bruckheimer, who collaborated on ”Top Gun: Maverick,” weighed the possibilities, according to GQ magazine.
Kosinski noted Cruise’s exceptional talent and skill behind the wheel but hinted at potential risks. Many crew members who transitioned from “Top Gun: Maverick” to “F1” had extensive experience working with Cruise on “Mission: Unachievable” films.
Graham Kelly, action-vehicle supervisor, suggested Cruise’s involvement might have led to a crash. he emphasized cruise’s tendency to push limits, a trait that Kelly found “terrifying” during his work on the “Mission: Impossible” series. Kelly contrasted this with Pitt, who he said is more measured and aware of his limitations.
The F1 project represents a return to Kosinski’s earlier ambitions. Before “Top Gun: Maverick,” he envisioned a “Ford v Ferrari” film with both Cruise and Pitt, but the budget proved too high.James Mangold eventually directed “Ford v Ferrari” with Christian Bale and Matt Damon.
Cruise is currently starring in “Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning,” which recently achieved a $200 million global debut, marking a franchise record. Pitt’s F1 movie is scheduled to premiere June 27.
“Tom always pushes it to the limit, but at the same time is super capable and very skilled,” Kosinski said.“They both have the natural talent for driving. But yeah, I could see Tom maybe scaring us a little bit more.”
“We’d have had a crash,” Kelly quipped about Cruise starring in “F1” over Pitt. “Tom pushes it to the limit. I mean really to the limit. That terrifies me.”
