Tom Cruise Earns Guinness World Record for Fiery Skydives
Tom Cruise, 62, has secured a Guinness World Record for the “most high altitude parachute jumps in fire performed by an individual.” The record acknowledges his daring stunts during the making of Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning.
The Guinness World Records announced June 5 that Cruise completed 16 parachute jumps on fire for the film. These fiery skydives showcase his commitment to performing authentic action sequences.
Craig Glenday, editor-in-chief at Guinness World Records, lauded Cruise’s dedication. “Tom doesn’t just play action film heroes, he is an action hero,” Glenday said. He added that Cruise’s success stems from his pursuit of authenticity and pushing boundaries, making the Guinness World Record title a fitting recognition of his fearlessness.
In the eighth installment of the franchise, Cruise’s character, Ethan Hunt, faces off against his nemesis Gabriel, played by Esai Morales. One scene involves hunt plummeting from an aircraft engulfed in flames, deploying a parachute that also ignites and disintegrates.
For this sequence, Cruise, a licensed skydiver, jumped from a helicopter 16 times. He was attached to a fuel-soaked parachute that was set ablaze. According to Guinness World Records,he then detached the burning remnants before safely deploying a second parachute. No other actor or stunt performer has attempted such a high number of life-threatening falls.
