Hertha BSC Managing Director Herrich to Depart at Season’s End
Berlin – Hertha BSC, the second-tier football club, will be seeking a new managing director as Thomas E. Herrich is set to leave his post at the end of the current season. the club made the announcement Wednesday, leaving questions about the future leadership.
Herrich’s Departure: A Mutual Decision?
The announcement follows an evening where Herrich and club President Fabian Drescher attended a championship festivity for Eisbären Berlin. The club stated that Herrich offered to terminate his contract, originally set to expire June 30, 2025, after ”intensive discussions” with the Presidium regarding the club’s strategic realignment. The Presidium accepted his offer.
though, sources suggest the separation may not have been entirely amicable. Reports indicate that herrich’s departure was not a entirely mutual decision.
Stability Amidst Change
This personnel change comes as Hertha BSC has seen some stability under its new coach, Stefan Leitl. While the club’s financial situation remains challenging, observers believe securing a license for the upcoming season should not pose a significant problem.
Despite strong fan support, Hertha BSC has struggled with consistent stability. Quoting Austrian writer Wolf Haas, one might say, “Now something has happened again.”
Herrich’s Two-Decade Tenure
Herrich’s departure marks the end of a 20-year association with Hertha BSC. He joined the club in 2005 from Sportfive, a sports rights marketing firm, initially serving as a branch manager. In 2009, he was promoted within Hertha BSC GmbH and co. KGAA. He became the sole managing director in the summer of 2022. Herrich extended his contract in March 2024 and, since July 1, 2024, has served alongside Ralf Huschen, also acting as the management’s spokesperson.
Financial Stewardship and Challenges
Herrich played a crucial role in Hertha’s recent history, notably in navigating financial difficulties. In the spring of 2023, he acknowledged the club was a “renovation case,” having burned through 250 million euros.
The club’s very existence was threatened, with the potential loss of its license looming. Herrich, however, remained optimistic and implemented a consolidation strategy that proved vital in ensuring the club’s financial survival following its relegation.
Succession Speculation
The question now turns to who will succeed Herrich. Jonas Boldt, the former managing director of HSV, has been mentioned as a potential candidate. though, recent reports suggest his interest in the position may have cooled. Sources indicate that there have been no recent discussions between Hertha BSC and Boldt, possibly as Drescher prioritized finalizing Herrich’s exit.
