‘Tom and Jerry: Forbidden Compass’ Set for China Release

Warner Bros. Pictures will release the animated feature, tom and Jerry: Forbidden Compass, in China on August 9. The film, a Chinese co-production, features the iconic cat and mouse in a new adventure.
The world premiere of Tom and Jerry: Forbidden Compass is slated for the Shanghai International Film Festival. The movie sees Tom and Jerry accidentally time-traveling through a museum. They encounter new friends and face off against mysterious adversaries.
Wu Zhou Film Distribution Co. Ltd. will handle distribution in China. Zhang Gang, who previously co-directed Kuiba 3 and worked on the animation for No.7 Cherry Lane, directed the film. No.7 Cherry Lane won Best Screenplay at the Venice International Film Festival in 2019.
This isn’t the first time Warner Bros. has created a localized version of the Tom and Jerry IP for Asian audiences. In 2023, a Singapore-based series of shorts premiered on Cartoon Network and HBO Go before a global release. Shorts were also produced for Japanese audiences.
This year marks the 85th anniversary of Tom and Jerry. William Hanna and Joseph Barbera created the characters in 1940.
