Tom Llamas Balances Family, Dedication in new NBC Nightly News Role
Updated june 3, 2025
Tom Llamas is prioritizing family as he steps into his new position as anchor of NBC Nightly News. Llamas took over the role in March, following Lester Holt’s departure after a decade. Llamas is the first Latino to anchor the weeknight news program.
Llamas emphasized his commitment to both his family and the show. “I’m gonna be up early.I’m gonna be working late…dedicated to two things in my life: my family and that show,” Llamas told Jose Diaz-balart on NBC nightly News just before his debut.
The son of Cuban refugees, Llamas credits his parents for his interest in current events and his strong work ethic. He grew up in Miami, where his parents, who fled Cuba during Fidel Castro’s regime, met as teenagers after immigrating to the U.S.

Llamas met his wife, Jennifer, at Loyola University New Orleans. They married in 2006. Jennifer works as a media producer.
To say that my parents came here with nothing and now their son is gonna be the anchor of Nightly News … to me, that means the American Dream is still alive. And I know that because I’m living it.
What’s next
Llamas aims to bring significant stories to viewers every night, continuing the legacy of trusted journalism at NBC Nightly News.
