Authorities provided updates on the search for Tom Phillips, who was killed in a shootout with police after years hiding in the New zealand bush with his three children.
Timeline of Events
Tom Phillips, a man wanted by police, went into hiding in December 2019 with his three children. The extensive manhunt concluded on Monday, September 8, 2025, when Phillips was shot and killed during an encounter with police. Details about the campsites used during his time evading authorities are now being released.
On Tuesday, September 9, 2025, Commissioner Jill Rogers of the New Zealand Police provided information and images related to the campsites where Phillips and his children were located. Both the camp and the scene of the shooting remain active crime scenes as forensic staff continue to gather evidence.
Children’s Wellbeing and Care
The three children involved in the ordeal have been reunited with new Zealand’s Ministry for Children, known as Oranga Tamariki. Commissioner Rogers stated that police staff described the children as ”engaged” and willing to communicate, and were provided with snacks and drinks while awaiting transport.
“While they are now in the care of Oranga Tamariki, we will continue to work closely with the children, taking the time and sensitivity that is needed after the ordeal they have been through,” Rogers said.
