Tommaso Ciampa’s AEW Debut Was Originally Planned For Collision

by David Thompson - Sports Editor

Tommaso Ciampa’s arrival in All Elite Wrestling was one of the more anticipated signings of early 2026, but the former WWE star’s debut didn’t unfold exactly as planned. While his first appearance on AEW programming came on on “Dynamite,” responding to Mark Briscoe’s TNT Championship Open Challenge, the initial schedule called for Ciampa to debut four days earlier at “Collision.”

According to Fightful Select, the original plan was for Ciampa to appear on the episode of “Collision,” challenging Briscoe. However, “inclement weather” forced a significant shift in AEW’s plans, requiring a complete reworking of the show and ultimately delaying Ciampa’s in-ring debut. The show, taped on in Orlando, Florida, was impacted enough to necessitate the change.

The delay proved to be a fortunate turn of events, at least from a visibility standpoint. Moving the debut to “Dynamite,” a larger platform than “Collision,” exposed Ciampa to a wider audience. He ultimately made a successful debut, defeating Briscoe on at “Collision” to capture the AEW TNT Championship. That reign, however, was short-lived, as he lost the title to Kyle Fletcher on the edition of “Dynamite.”

The timing of the official announcement of Ciampa’s departure from WWE also proved somewhat curious. He wasn’t moved to the WWE alumni section of their website until – the same day he debuted in AEW. This suggests that while terms with AEW had been agreed upon several days prior, the weather-related disruption allowed WWE to align the public announcement with his appearance on rival programming.

AEW officials were reportedly meticulous in keeping Ciampa’s arrival under wraps. Fightful Select noted that Ciampa was “well hidden” backstage on the night of his “Dynamite” debut, a deliberate effort to prevent leaks and maintain the element of surprise. This secrecy underscores the importance AEW placed on making a strong first impression with the former NXT Champion.

Ciampa himself has spoken about his decision to leave WWE, stating that he had been considering a change for “the last two to three years.” He identified AEW as the only viable destination, citing the promotion’s significant impact on the professional wrestling landscape in recent years. He saw AEW as a place where he could showcase his talents and potentially expand his reach into ROH, where he already has a strong reputation.

The circumstances surrounding Ciampa’s debut highlight the unpredictable nature of live sports entertainment. While unforeseen events like inclement weather can disrupt carefully laid plans, they can also create opportunities for unexpected moments and heightened drama. In this case, the delay ultimately didn’t diminish the impact of Ciampa’s arrival in AEW, and he quickly established himself as a prominent figure in the promotion.

Following his TNT title loss to Fletcher, Ciampa continues to be a featured performer on AEW Collision and Dynamite. His presence adds a significant level of experience and credibility to the AEW roster, and his matches consistently deliver high-quality action for fans. The initial setback caused by the weather ultimately proved to be a minor inconvenience on the path to a new chapter in his career.
