Tony Hawk Names Surfer’s Trick: “Stale Fish Flipper”
Surfers may not be the best at naming tricks, but when Hughie Vaughn,an Australian aerialist, landed a groundbreaking maneuver at the Swatch Nines event in Waco,Texas, help arrived from an unexpected source: Tony Hawk.
Hawk, impressed by what many called the “best air ever done,” offered his suggestion: ”Stale fish flipper.” Or perhaps just a “stale fish backflip,” to keep it simple.
Hawk’s credentials in the trick-naming department are considerable. He claims to have landed 89 skateboarding tricks first, including the first 900 on a vert ramp at the 1999 X Games.
August howell, reporting from the Swatch Nines event, gathered reactions from other surfers. Mason Ho described Vaughn’s flip as “some of the highest quality surfing I’ve ever seen in my life,” adding that it resembled snowboarding.
Adding to the aerial excitement, Matt Meola of Maui soon after landed another aerial, a tweaked alley oop with a double rotation, that some hailed as the “best ever.” The landing wasn’t perfect, with a slight revert, leaving the trick’s name uncertain. A 720, perhaps?
The question remains: Whose air was better, Vaughn’s or Meola’s? The subjectivity of surfing endures.
