Tony Iommi Announces New Solo Album From The Dark

Black Sabbath guitarist Tony Iommi has announced his first solo album in over two decades, From The Dark, set for release on October 23 via BMG. The project marks Iommi’s first new music since the death of Black Sabbath co-founder Ozzy Osbourne in July 2025, as well as his first solo work since Fused in 2001. The album features collaborations with Norwegian vocalist Jorn Lande, bassist Becky Baldwin, and drummer Karl Brazil, with Iommi taking on production duties alongside long-time partner Mike Exeter.

The record includes eight tracks exploring themes of existentialism and human impermanence, with Iommi describing it as “a great album, it rocks!” in a statement. The lead single, World Alone, premiered during a global streaming event in Iommi’s hometown of Birmingham, near the Black Sabbath Bridge, which was dedicated to the band in 2019. The accompanying video depicts a dystopian narrative centered on a character known as “The Believer,” trapped in a surreal video-game world.

Iommi confirmed the album’s release date in a statement, emphasizing its personal significance. “It’s an album we’ve really enjoyed making,” he said. “We’re not trying to prove anything—just creating something we believe in.” The tracklist includes Over The Violent Sun, Black Times, Stormwatcher, and Legacy, with deluxe editions featuring two bonus tracks: Scent Of Dark and Deified. A limited 7-inch single of World Alone will be released on September 4.

The album’s creation followed Iommi’s participation in Black Sabbath’s final farewell show in July 2025, a performance that drew over 50,000 fans to Birmingham’s Villa Park. The event, titled Back To The Beginning, featured appearances by Metallica, Slayer, and other heavy metal icons. Ozzy Osbourne’s passing just weeks later left a profound impact on the band’s surviving members.

Iommi reflected on Osbourne’s legacy in a July 2026 Instagram post, writing, “I still can’t believe he’s not with us.” He described their frequent weekly conversations about health and daily life, noting, “The fans have been absolutely brilliant… there will never be another Ozzy.” Bassist Geezer Butler echoed this sentiment, calling Osbourne “the Prince Of Darkness” and emphasizing the “incredible memories” shared with the band. Drummer Bill Ward expressed similar grief, stating, “Every day, there is persistent silence. We miss you so much.”

The From The Dark project also coincides with the first-ever “Ozzy Day” in Birmingham, held in July 2026 to commemorate the singer’s life. Fans gathered at the New Street Station’s “Ozzy The Bull” statue, while a brass band performed Black Sabbath classics. Iommi, who has remained largely private since Osbourne’s death, described the tribute as a testament to the “love and respect” fans continue to show.

The album’s themes of mortality and resilience align with Iommi’s long-standing role as a pioneer of heavy metal.
