The Future of Blood & Guts
All Elite Wrestling (AEW) President Tony Khan has acknowledged challenges in scheduling the next Blood & Guts match, a signature event known for its massive two-ring steel cage structure. Khan hinted at future announcements regarding the event, which has been an annual staple of AEW programming since its debut in 2021. As of late september 2024, a date for the 2025 edition remains unconfirmed, fueling speculation among fans.
The primary scheduling hurdle stems from the logistical complexities of hosting an event requiring a unique seating arrangement to accommodate the double-ring cage. Khan explained that announcing a Blood & Guts event necessitates revealing seat maps reflecting this specialized setup, and currently, no such configurations are available for sale.
Current Roster Dynamics and Potential Matchups
despite the scheduling uncertainty, Khan believes the current AEW landscape, notably the escalating conflicts between various factions, provides fertile ground for a compelling Blood & Guts match. The ongoing rivalry involving Jon Moxley’s Death riders is a particularly strong candidate for inclusion in the event.
“I think there is great potential for a Blood & Guts event. It requires a unique seating setup because with a two-ring setup, it involves putting an event on sale, basically telling the people, ‘This is going to be Blood & Guts,'” Khan stated, as transcribed by WrestlingNews.co from an AEW youtube video. “It’s not a show that is up right now because everyone has seen the seat maps, and there are no double-ring shows up. I do think there is a good chance of that. Please stay tuned.”
Blood & Guts: A Modern Take on wargames
Blood & Guts is AEW’s interpretation of the WarGames match, a concept originally created by Dusty Rhodes in 1987. The match pits two teams against each other inside a large, roofed steel cage encompassing two wrestling rings. AEW’s version aims to be closer to Rhodes’ original vision than the current iteration presented by World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE).
Here’s a look back at previous Blood & Guts matches:
- may 5, 2021: The Inner Circle vs. The Pinnacle
- 2022 (Detroit): Jericho Appreciation Society vs. Blackpool Combat Club
- 2023 (boston): The Golden Elite vs. Blackpool Combat Club
- July 24, 2024 (Nashville): Team AEW defeated The Elite
The Legacy of WarGames and Dusty Rhodes
The WarGames match, pioneered by Dusty Rhodes in 1987 within the National Wrestling Alliance (NWA), quickly became a hallmark of the promotion’s Starrcade events. The original concept involved two teams battling within a double-ring steel cage, with staggered entries and a unique set of rules designed to create chaotic and dramatic encounters. The match’s popularity extended to WWE (then WWF) in the early 1990s, though the presentation evolved over time.
