The live-action remake of 2010’s How to Train Your dragon soared at the box office, grossing $83.7 million domestically. Early previews emphasized the adaptation’s fidelity, closely mirroring scenes from the original film directed by Chris sanders (Lilo & Stitch) and Dean DeBlois.
A standout element carried over to the live-action version is Toothless, the dragon, whose photorealistic design closely resembles his 2010 counterpart.
Tho, during the initial advancement of the first film, adapted from Cressida Cowell‘s book series, Toothless sported a vastly different appearance, far removed from the sleek, black, cat-like design that became central to the franchise.
Sanders, in a Gold Derby interview, reflected on joining the first How to Train Your Dragon mid-production. He was initially working on The Croods when Universal requested he switch projects. “They were switching directions so I jumped onto that production mid-production,” Sanders recalled. “A lot of the models had already been built, the characters had largely been built, et cetera.”
One of those characters was Toothless, though not the version familiar to fans. Before Sanders’ involvement, the design eventually used for the Terrible Terror – a spindly creature resembling the dragons in Cowell’s books – was intended for Toothless.

“We thought in order for the story to work we’re going to have to change Toothless’s design,” Sanders said.
The team restarted the design process, which ultimately helped solidify the final film. “It was kind of a rush job,” Sanders said, “but the artists did a brilliant job of designing and rigging him.”
What’s next
With the live-action remake’s success, fans eagerly anticipate further adaptations and expansions of the How to Train Your Dragon universe, curious to see how other characters and creatures will be brought to life.
