Updated May 27, 2025
The next chapter of the ‘Top gun’ saga may be closer than fans think. Christopher McQuarrie, writer and producer of ‘Top Gun: Maverick’, revealed that a plot for ‘Top Gun 3’ is already in place. The film will likely see Tom Cruise,62,reprise his role as Pete “Maverick” Mitchell, continuing the high-flying action that has defined the franchise.
McQuarrie, 56, shared the news on the ‘Happy Sad Confused’ podcast with Josh Horowitz. When asked if crafting a third ‘Top Gun’ film presented challenges, McQuarrie responded that the story “wasn’t hard” to come up with. He credited screenwriter Ehren Kruger,52,with pitching an idea that quickly solidified the framework for the upcoming movie.
The original ‘Top Gun’, released in 1986, catapulted Cruise to stardom. It followed Maverick’s journey through the Fighter Weapons School, his rivalry with iceman (Val Kilmer), and his romance with instructor Charlotte “Charlie” Blackwood (Kelly McGillis). ‘Top Gun: Maverick’,released 36 years later, saw Maverick training a new generation of TOPGUN graduates for a dangerous mission, while confronting his past.
It’s not the action, it’s not even the level of or intensity of or the scope and scale of the action [or] the engineering around the action, it’s none of those things — it’s the emotion.
According to McQuarrie, the key to a successful ‘Top gun’ movie lies in its emotional core, not just the spectacle of the action sequences. He emphasized that the emotional connection with the characters and their stories is what resonates most with audiences.
What’s next
