Paramount has officially confirmed the development of “Top Gun 3,” with Tom Cruise set to reprise his role as Pete “Maverick” Mitchell in the sequel to the 2022 blockbuster “Top Gun: Maverick.” The announcement was made during Paramount’s presentation at the CinemaCon convention in Las Vegas on April 16, 2026, where studio executives revealed that the film is in active development with a script already underway.
The news confirms long-standing industry speculation that a third installment would follow the unprecedented success of “Top Gun: Maverick,” which grossed $1.5 billion worldwide against a $170 million budget upon its release in 2022. That film marked Cruise’s return to the iconic role 36 years after his debut as Maverick in the original 1986 “Top Gun,” directed by Tony Scott.
Producer Jerry Bruckheimer is also set to return for the third film, continuing his involvement with the franchise that began with the original movie. While director Joseph Kosinski, who helmed “Top Gun: Maverick,” has not yet signed on to return, screenwriter Ehren Kruger — who co-wrote the 2022 sequel — is reportedly already at work on the script for “Top Gun 3.”
Cruise’s continued involvement with the franchise comes amid a significant corporate development: Paramount is set to acquire Warner Bros. Discovery in a $111 billion deal, which would place “Top Gun 3” under the newly formed larger entity. The proposed merger has drawn public concern from over 1,000 film and television industry professionals, including notable figures such as Joaquin Phoenix, Jane Fonda, Bryan Cranston, Javier Bardem, David Fincher, Denis Villeneuve, and Emma Thompson, who signed an open letter warning that media consolidation threatens the integrity and diversity of the entertainment industry.
Although the full cast for “Top Gun 3” has not been confirmed, several stars from “Top Gun: Maverick” have expressed interest in returning. Glen Powell, who played Lieutenant Jake “Hangman” Seresin, previously suggested in 2024 that he would reprise his role and hinted at knowledge of a potential filming timeline. Miles Teller, who portrayed Lieutenant Bradley “Rooster” Bradshaw, and Monica Barbaro, who played Lieutenant Natasha “Phoenix” Trace, are also among those expected to potentially return, though no official casting announcements have been made.
“Top Gun: Maverick” received widespread critical acclaim upon its release, earning six Academy Award nominations including Best Picture and winning the Oscar for Best Sound. The film was praised for its practical flying sequences and commitment to authentic aviation storytelling, with Cruise once again performing many of his own stunt sequences in the jet cockpit.
As of now, no official release date has been announced for “Top Gun 3,” and details regarding the plot remain under wraps. However, the confirmation of active development — including a script in progress and the return of key creative personnel — signals that the next chapter in the Maverick story is moving forward through established studio channels.
