Health Recommendations

Te Whatu Ora emphasizes the importance of vaccination. Babies are especially at risk for severe illness from whooping cough. Dr. Matt Reid, a public health specialist, states that about 50% of infants infected before 12 months require hospitalization, with a small percentage facing fatal outcomes. In 2023, there were no deaths reported, but three infants died from this infection in 2022.

Vaccination Schedule

  • Infants: Vaccination at 6 weeks, 3 months, 5 months, and again at 4 years.
  • Booster: Additional shot at age 11 (school year 7).
  • Pregnant women: Free vaccination available.
  • Adults: One free booster available from age 45 if fewer than four previous tetanus doses received and another available from age 65.

Understanding Whooping Cough

Whooping cough leads to severe coughing fits and can last for weeks or months, hence the nickname “100-day cough.” In early stages, individuals are highly contagious. Signs of infection typically appear one week after exposure.

Symptoms include:

  • Blocked or runny nose
  • Sneezing
  • Mild fever
  • Uncontrollable coughing fits
  • Coughing that may cause vomiting
  • Thick mucus

Young babies may struggle to breathe during coughing spells and may turn blue.

Stay informed and protect those at risk by getting vaccinated.
