Playwright Talene Monahon has won the 2026 Horton Foote Prize for her play Meet the Cartozians, according to an announcement made on September 9, 2026, by Executive Director Valerie Brea Ross and Prize Board Chair Mari Marchbanks.
Award Details and Ceremony Information
Monahon will receive a $50,000 cash award alongside a limited-edition photograph of Horton Foote by Keith Carter, an image featured in the permanent collection of the National Portrait Gallery in Washington, D.C. Tony Award-winning director David Cromer will present the prize during a private celebration scheduled for Monday, October 19, 2026, at New York’s Lotos Club. Second Stage Theater nominated Meet the Cartozians for the honor. The production previously premiered Off-Broadway in November 2025 at Second Stage’s Irene Diamond Stage at the Pershing Square Signature Center Theater, directed by David Cromer and featuring performances by Andrea Martin and Will Brill. Following its run, the script earned recognition as a 2026 Pulitzer Prize finalist for Drama.
Thematic Scope and Critical Reception
Set across two distinct eras, Meet the Cartozians explores a century of American social dynamics. In the 1920s, an Armenian American man fights for legal recognition, while a modern generation pursues fame and cultural influence. The work blends historical drama with sharp satire to examine questions of belonging and identity. The Artistic Judges Panel for 2026 featured Tony Award-winning actor and Honorary Chair Celia Keenan-Bolger, New York Stage and Film Artistic Director Ian Belknap, Obie Award-winning director Taylor Reynolds, Seaview Creative Executive Lizzie Stern, and Tony-nominated lighting and set designer Jiyoun Chang.
The process of selecting Meet the Cartozians for the Horton Foote Prize was especially thrilling because there were so many exceptional plays submitted this year. However, Talene’s play was a unanimous favorite with the judges.
Celia Keenan-Bolger Judge Chair Celia Keenan-Bolger noted that the winning play balances humor, tenderness, and difficult themes including colorism and displacement. Judge Lizzie Stern further described the work as morally complex, sweeping, and inquisitive.
Additional Grants and Non-Profit Recognition
The October ceremony will also feature the presentation of the Horton Foote Prize Gratitude Gift. Selected by Honorary Chair Celia Keenan-Bolger, this year’s $10,000 non-profit award will go to Waterwell. Founded in 2002 by Arian Moayed and Tom Ridgely, the Obie Award-winning New York company is currently led by Artistic Director Lee Sunday Evans. Waterwell focuses on theatrical, film, and digital media projects addressing civic questions. Established in 2010, the Horton Foote Prize continues to recognize original American plays of exceptional quality from playwrights nominated by professional theaters nationwide.
