Montpellier Méditerranée Métropole’s Low Emission Zone (ZFE) has been in effect since July 1, 2022, as part of a national initiative established by the Loi d’Orientation des Mobilités (LOM) of 2019 to reduce air pollution in urban areas.
The zone covers the city of Montpellier and ten surrounding municipalities: Castelnau-le-Lez, Clapiers, Grabels, Jacou, Juvignac, Lattes, Le Crès, Pérols, Saint-Jean-de-Védas, and Villeneuve-lès-Maguelone, with plans to expand to all 31 municipalities of the metropolis by 2026.
All vehicles operating within the ZFE must display a Crit’Air environmental sticker, which costs €3.11 plus €0.61 in postage, totaling €3.72 per vehicle, and can only be ordered through the official government website at www.certificat-air.gouv.fr.
As of 2024, the traffic ban applies specifically to pre-1997 petrol vehicles (first registered before January 1, 1997) and pre-2006 diesel vehicles (first registered before January 1, 2006), which are considered the most polluting under the system.
Exemptions are available for low-mileage drivers through the “petit rouleur” derogation, which applies to vehicles driven fewer than 8,000 kilometers per year, requiring applicants to submit a formal request.
Financial support is accessible for both private individuals and professionals seeking to replace older, higher-emission vehicles with cleaner alternatives, though specific subsidy amounts and eligibility criteria are managed locally.
