* Stock lending: A transaction established when a lender (usually a bank, insurance company, or pension fund) that holds a large amount of stock for a long period of time lends stocks to a borrower (usually a securities company or asset management company) in need of stocks in return for a certain fee, and the borrower agrees to repay the lender with securities of the same type and amount at the end of the contract. * Stock lending is mainly conducted by foreigners and institutions, and the Korea Securities Depository, Korea Securities Finance, and securities companies handle stock lending business.
* Short selling: A transaction in which a person sells securities that he or she does not own in anticipation of a price drop or sells securities that he or she borrows in order to settle the transaction and then repurchase them at a lower price in the future to make a profit. However, naked short selling is prohibited in Korea.
※ Relationship between lending and short selling
* Since naked short selling is currently prohibited by regulations, confirmation of whether a lending agreement has been concluded prior to short selling is required. Accordingly, lending transactions, which involve lending and repaying stocks over the counter, and short selling, which involves selling borrowed stocks on the counter, are interrelated.
* However, since the borrower of a lending transaction can use the borrowed stocks for various investment strategies such as short selling, settlement of trading transactions, profit and hedging, the balance of the lending transaction does not indicate the expected quantity of short selling that will occur in the future.
※ Balance increase/decrease = Quantity of contract (borrowing) – Quantity of repayment, Balance amount = Balance quantity on the relevant date * Closing price of the relevant item on the relevant date
