LAS VEGAS – Ilia Topuria, rapidly ascending the pound-for-pound rankings, seeks a career-defining moment Saturday at UFC 317. He will face Charles Oliveira for the vacant lightweight title. The fight headlines International Fight Week, the UFC’s equivalent to the Super Bowl, which started in 2012 before UFC 148.
Topuria vacated his featherweight belt in April to pursue the two-division champion title. He believes a first-round knockout of Oliveira would cement his status as the world’s best fighter. Topuria won the featherweight title in February 2024,defeating Alexander Volkanovski at UFC 298 and than defending it against max Holloway at UFC 308 in October. He has competed in bantamweight, featherweight, and lightweight divisions.
Oliveira, 35, last held the title in 2022. He dismisses Topuria’s knockout prediction. He sees Topuria as another opponent underestimating him.
