The Managing Director of the Tema Oil refinery (TOR), Edmond Kombat, reports the refinery’s recovery plan is progressing, demonstrating improvements in key operational areas. Kombat shared this assessment during a capacity-building workshop hosted by Energy News Africa Limited in collaboration with the tema Regional branch of the Ghana journalists Association (GJA) on December 12, 2023. The workshop convened journalists, energy analysts, and industry stakeholders to discuss Ghana’s energy sector and the future of its petroleum infrastructure.
Challenges Faced Upon appointment
Edmond Kombat detailed the significant difficulties he inherited upon assuming the role of Managing Director at TOR. The refinery was reportedly burdened by substantial debts, amounting to several million dollars, hindering basic operational functions. These financial constraints negatively impacted staff welfare and limited investment in essential equipment, technology upgrades, and routine maintenance.
Kombat also highlighted a decline in employee morale,stemming from the abandonment of promotional structures and a general sense of uncertainty regarding the refinery’s future.This led to a reduction in staffing levels through resignations and retirements.
