Dispute with Péter Magyar Intensifies
László Toroczkai, chairman of the ‘our Country’ movement, vehemently denied accusations from Péter Magyar that his party functions as a satellite of fidesz. Toroczkai addressed the claims during an appearance on ATVS “Straight Speech” Thursday evening, asserting that such assertions are demonstrably false. The dispute highlights growing tensions within the Hungarian political landscape as new and established parties vie for influence.
Toroczkai stated that as Magyar’s departure from the ruling establishment, he has consistently characterized ‘our Country’ as being aligned with Fidesz, alleging a pattern of consistent voting alignment. To counter this narrative, ‘Our Country’ conducted an analysis of parliamentary votes cast sence May 2022.
Voting record Reveals Divergence
The analysis, presented by Toroczkai, revealed a surprising divergence in voting patterns. According to the data, ‘Our Country’ voted with parties described as “balliber” (broadly, liberal-conservative) in 58% of parliamentary votes, while only supporting Fidesz proposals in 21% of cases. Toroczkai clarified that the instances of alignment with Fidesz primarily concerned issues such as migration policy and the rights of Hungarians living abroad.
“From now on, that Péter Magyar knows the truth that he lies about us, it becomes clear that he is not interested in the truth, but does the same thing as fidesz” with his slanders,” Toroczkai stated, emphasizing his frustration with what he perceives as deliberate misinformation.
Confrontation in Dorog and Poll Concerns
Toroczkai personally delivered a dossier detailing this voting record to Péter Magyar on Tuesday in Dorog. The encounter, which took place within a police cordon at a Tisza Party forum, was reportedly contentious, with attendees repeatedly calling for ‘Our Country’ representatives to leave. Toroczkai maintained he intended only to present the data and engage in a brief discussion, claiming the Tisza Party president was more hostile than representatives of Fidesz.
Responding to recent idea Institute research indicating ‘Our country’ is currently 4% below the parliamentary threshold, Toroczkai dismissed the polls as manipulative. He pointed to the party’s performance in last year’s municipal elections, where they secured 15-20% of the vote in several counties, as a more accurate reflection of their support base. He noted this performance necessitated the creation of county-level candidate lists.
Similar Tactics? A Critique of Magyar and Orbán
Toroczkai drew a parallel between the tactics employed by Péter Magyar and Viktor Orbán, accusing both of utilizing similar strategies to address the public and the media. He challenged both leaders to participate in a prime ministerial debate alongside Klára Dobrev, a prominent opposition figure.
Upcoming Revelations and Allegations of a Broader Conspiracy
Toroczkai concluded the interview with a promise to reveal evidence next week pertaining to a “executive case” that he believes will be deeply damaging to the government. he claimed possession of a voice recording implicating not only previously identified figures like György Schadl and Pál Völner, but also an unnamed minister and a former Fidesz MP in a wider-reaching corruption scheme.
