Toronto FC Strengthens Defence with Signing of Chilean International Benjamín Kuscevic
TRANSFER TRACKER STATUS: Signing
Toronto FC announced Thursday the acquisition of defender Benjamín Kuscevic on loan from Brazilian Série B side Fortaleza. The 29-year-old Chilean international will be with the club through the 2026 MLS season, with an option for Toronto to purchase his contract.
The signing marks Toronto FC’s second addition of a veteran center back this offseason, following the earlier acquisition of Walker Zimmerman in free agency. General manager Jason Hernandez expressed his satisfaction with the signing, stating, “We are happy to welcome Benjamín to Toronto FC.”
Hernandez further highlighted Kuscevic’s experience and potential impact, adding, “Benjamín has established himself as a strong defender and steady presence in prominent leagues in South America and in international competition. We look forward to his quick integration with the group and our work together during the 2026 campaign.”
Kuscevic brings a wealth of professional experience to Toronto, having amassed 244 professional matches with 12 goals and 2 assists. He began his career at Universidad Católica in Chile, where he contributed to seven titles for Los Cruzados. His career has also included stints with prominent Brazilian clubs Palmeiras, Coritiba, and Fortaleza, where he secured eight trophies while playing for Palmeiras.
On the international stage, Kuscevic has earned 14 caps representing Chile’s national team.
Kuscevic is expected to form a strong central defensive partnership with Zimmerman, anchoring Toronto’s remade backline. The team also features left back Matheus Pereira, acquired this winter from CD Santa Clara of Liga Portugal, and right back Richie Laryea, who is projected to represent Canada at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
