Toronto police are intensifying their search for an 80-year-old man who has been missing since Sunday, raising concerns for his safety due to a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease. The man, identified only as Steven by authorities, was last seen in the Scarborough area of the city.

The search effort has been escalated as more than 24 hours have passed since Steven was last sighted. Police released new photographs of him on Monday and again on Tuesday, appealing to the public for assistance in locating him. He was initially reported missing after being seen near Sheppard Avenue East and Birchmount Road, in the Tam O’Shanter-Sullivan neighbourhood. He was subsequently spotted walking on Birchmount Road, south of Ellesmere Road, just before 3:30 p.m. on Sunday.

According to police, Steven is described as approximately five-foot-six with a slim build and short, balding grey hair. He was last seen wearing a navy blue button-down shirt, a navy blue fleece vest, blue jeans, and grey running shoes with white soles. Constable Viktor Sarudi of the Toronto Police Service emphasized the urgency of the situation, stating, “Time is of the essence. All types of resources are being dedicated to finding Stephen, and there are concerns.”

The vulnerability of the missing man is a key factor driving the increased police response. Constable Sarudi explained that Steven’s Alzheimer’s diagnosis means he “might not fully understand what’s happening” if approached by members of the public. Police are requesting that anyone who spots Steven approach him with compassion and immediately contact authorities.

The search is complicated by the recent and anticipated severe winter weather in the Greater Toronto Area. Up to 15 cm of snow was forecast for parts of the region, with a winter storm watch in effect. This presents significant challenges for both the missing man and the search teams. The possibility that Steven may be attempting to use public transit has also prompted police to extend their search to include subway stations and routes, though it remains unconfirmed whether he is able to navigate the system.

The case highlights the growing challenges faced by urban centers in caring for aging populations, particularly those with cognitive impairments. Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias are increasingly prevalent in developed nations, placing a strain on healthcare systems and social services. The disappearance of a vulnerable senior underscores the need for robust support networks and proactive measures to ensure the safety and well-being of individuals living with these conditions.

While the focus remains on locating Steven, the incident also serves as a reminder of the potential risks faced by seniors during periods of inclement weather. Exposure to extreme cold can be particularly dangerous for older adults, who may be more susceptible to hypothermia and other cold-related illnesses. Community awareness and vigilance are crucial in ensuring the safety of vulnerable populations during winter months.

Toronto police are urging anyone with information regarding Steven’s whereabouts to contact them immediately. The investigation is ongoing, and authorities are utilizing all available resources in their efforts to bring him home safely. The case is particularly sensitive given Steven’s age and medical condition, and the police are appealing to the public to remain vigilant and report any sightings, no matter how insignificant they may seem.

The search for Steven comes amidst a backdrop of other recent incidents in the Toronto area, including police investigations into shots fired at a Queen West restaurant and preparations for the resumption of classes in Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia, following the arrival of school portables. However, the focus remains firmly on the search for the missing senior, with police emphasizing the critical need for public assistance.
