Toronto tempo: Canada’s First WNBA Team Unveils Energetic Name
Toronto, Canada – Get ready to feel the Tempo! Canada’s first-ever WNBA team has officially revealed its name: the toronto Tempo. The moniker, chosen from over 10,000 fan submissions, embodies the city’s vibrant energy and fast-paced spirit.
“Tempo is pace. It’s speed. It’s a heartbeat. And it’s what you feel when you step into the streets of this city,” said Teresa Resch, the team’s president,in a press release.
The proclamation comes six months after the Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) announced its historic expansion into Canada, marking the league’s first foray outside the United States. The move comes on the heels of a record-breaking 2024 WNBA season, which saw viewership soar to its highest point in over two decades, fueled by rising stars like Caitlin Clark and angel Reese.
The name reveal arrived earlier than anticipated after eagle-eyed fans spotted it prematurely added to a dropdown menu on the league’s website.
With the addition of the toronto Tempo, the WNBA now boasts 14 professional teams, with plans to expand to 16 by 2028.
“As Canada’s WNBA team, I know the Tempo will set our own pace, move at a championship cadence, and inspire peopel across this country,” Resch said.
The team’s logo, designed to reflect the Tempo’s values, features a basketball with a prominent “T” at its center. Six sharp lines extend from the ball, symbolizing the five players on the court and the sixth player: the fans. The lines also represent Toronto’s six boroughs.
The Toronto Tempo will tip off its inaugural season at Toronto’s Coca-Cola Coliseum in 2026. The team is owned and operated by Kilmer Sports Ventures, chaired by Larry Tanenbaum, a minority owner and chairman of Maple Leafs Sports and Entertainment. Tanenbaum’s portfolio includes ownership stakes in several other Toronto sports franchises, including the Toronto Maple Leafs (NHL), Toronto Raptors (NBA), and Toronto FC (MLS).
The arrival of the Toronto Tempo, in a country were basketball was invented, is a landmark moment for women’s sports in Canada.
