Torrential Downpour Brings Mexico City to a Standstill: Aerial Chaos and Flooded Streets

The SGIRPC issued recommendations to the population to take precautions, such as avoiding travel through areas prone to flooding, securing objects that can be blown away by the wind and getting the latest information through official communication channels.

Mexico City, September 16 (However).- The Comprehensive Risk Management and Civil Protection Secretariat (SGIRPC) activated this Monday the Red, Orange Alert the Yellow in the Mexico Citybecause of the heavy rain recorded in the afternoon, which caused damage to homes and buildings, in addition to road chaos in the capital.

An Orange Alert was also issued for Álvaro Obregón, Benito Juárez, Cuajimalpa and Venustiano Carranza, causing strong currents of water on roads, as well as falling trees, branches and tarps. Another, at the Yellow level, was activated in Azcapotzalco, Cuauhtémoc, Gustavo A. Madero, Milpa Alta, Miguel Hidalgo, Tláhuac and Xochimilco.

In addition, he asked to take measures to prevent accidents and material damage, as well as paying attention to weather updates and following Civil Defense instructions, as well as the importance of not throwing rubbish on the streets to avoid blocking sewers and drains.

According to videos circulating on social networks, the rain started at 6:00 pm, which led to stagnation due to blocked sewers and storm water infrastructure. Considering this, users reported that the water was entering their houses and roads, which was affecting them.

One of the viral cases was recorded on the street of Anastasio G. Sarabia and Antonio Cárdenas Rodríguez, from the Office of the Mayor of Iztapalapa, where a five meter long branch fell, causing damage to a parked private vehicle and optics and telephony lines.

Regarding Venustiano Carranza, on Norte 17 and Oriente 166, it was reported that a second tree about 10 meters long and 1.10 meters in diameter fell, which knocked down a wooden post without leaving any injuries. Given this, the capital authorities requested assistance from personnel from the Comprehensive Risk Management and Civil Protection Unit (UGIRPC) for the department.

Finally, on Avenida Insurgentes and City Hall, from the Office of the Mayor of Tlalpan, a pool of 50 meters of mirror and 60 centimeters deep was formed, as a result of the inadequacy of the drainage network and the depression that the road presents, by cause a. an individual’s vehicle will be stranded. AICM ADJUSTS TRIPS

Due to the weather, Mexico City International Airport (AICM) announced the adjustment of flights within its itinerary for this Monday, September 16, so it invited users to enter its official site to confirm the new schedules on each one of their airlines.

“Following the weather in and around the airport, some airlines decided to make adjustments to their schedules, for operational safety. If you have a flight scheduled for the next few hours, we recommend that you consult your airline. For its part, the Viva Aerobus company announced that its take-off and landings were suspended due to the weather in the airport area, so it recommended that its passengers take the necessary precautions during their transfer home and be informed of updates.
