Europe will face a total solar eclipse on August 12, 2026, offering a rare glimpse of the solar corona. Forbes describes the coming years as the start of a “golden age of total solar eclipses,” while Space reports the event is one day away from totality.

The Path Across Europe

The eclipse will be visible across parts of Europe, though the sun will only be completely obscured for those positioned within the specific path of totality. The Telegraph suggests the event may even offer a brief respite from the heatwaves currently affecting those regions.

Safety is paramount. The Guardian warns that observers must use certified solar filters or eclipse glasses to avoid permanent eye damage.

Lessons from the 2024 Shadow

The upcoming event follows the April 8, 2024, total solar eclipse that traversed Mexico, the United States, and Canada. During that crossing, photographer Petr Horálek noted the lunar shadow was almost 200 kilometers wide, plunging those in its path into unusual darkness.

For Horálek, affiliated with the Institute of Physics in Opava, the 2024 event was a technical exercise in precision. Stationed in Durango, Mexico, he used a combination of 200mm and 1100mm focal lengths to capture both the inner and wide solar corona.

Capturing Totality in Durango

Totality in Durango lasted between 3 minutes and 25 seconds and 3 minutes and 26 seconds. To document it, Horálek employed High Dynamic Range (HDR) techniques. His exposures ranged from 1/4000s to 2s for the wide corona, and from 1/500s to 4s for the inner corona.

He also captured “Baily’s Beads,” the shimmering light effect that occurs just before and after totality.

Celestial Visibility in the Dark

The sudden darkness of a total eclipse reveals more than just the sun. Horálek’s 2024 records show that bright planets and constellations became visible in the lunar shadow.

Among these discoveries were comet Pons-Brooks and comet SOHO-5008, the latter of which was discovered just before the eclipse.

As August 12, 2026, nears, observers in Europe are encouraged to find their place within the path of totality to witness the full obscuration of the sun.
